Upper Sixth Take On The British Physics Olympiad

Ten. Upper Sixth A-level physicists endured the gruelling British Physics Olympiad last term and managed to achieve some very impressive scores. Undoubtedly the toughest physics-related examination the students have sat so far, the physics challenge is made up of questions on a wide range of topics that test knowledge, understanding, application, problem-solving and resilience. Special mentions go to Ruby Clark and Giorgio Kleinmann, who both scored well into double figures through perseverance and a solid understanding of topics involved.

Boys 1st XI Football Team Through To The Semis In The ISFA Trophy

Many congratulations to the Boys 1st XI Football team on a dramatic Quarter Final penalty shoot-out win in the Independent Schools Football Association’s U18 Trophy.

Many congratulations to the Boys 1st XI Football team on a dramatic Quarter Final penalty shoot-out win in the Independent Schools Football Association’s U18 Trophy.

Having overcome Mill Hill School in their first-round match 8-1, the team were delighted to progress to the Quarter Final after a walkover against Oswestry School.

On Tuesday 29 January, they played a strong Chigwell School side away, in an evenly matched cup game. Both teams had good spells of possession, but the game finished in a 0-0 draw. That meant a penalty shoot-out where Theo Coles made two cracking saves on his birthday, which took the team into the Semi Final for the second year running.

They will now face King’s Chester on Wednesday 5 March.

A huge well done to them all!

Individual red and white carnations have been distributed to classrooms across the College for Saint Valentine’s Day.

Over the last few weeks, Princethorpe’s Sixth Formers have been busy promoting a charity fundraiser in aid of the British Heart Foundation. Selling red carnations for that special someone and white carnations as a thank you to a great friend.

Led by Charity Prefect, James, the College’s Cupids, have carefully prepared the flowers, delicately wrapping them and handwriting personal messages for the anonymous gifts.

This year, 68 recipients received a special delivery – we hope everyone enjoyed their St Valentine’s Day surprise.

School Of Rock Raised The Roof

Our College’s Musical Theatre Group production of School of Rock was superb.

Our College’s Musical Theatre Group production of School of Rock was superb. The Clarkson was filled full of energetic rock songs as audiences enjoyed the hilarious musical.

School of Rock told the story of Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn a few extra bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight-A students into an amazing rock band and eventually manages to get them to the Battle of the Bands.

School of Rock was filled with rock songs that raised the roof and was testimony to the transforming power of music. It was a brilliant show, full of vibrant energy and enthusiasm and we are all humming along to the songs after what was a most entertaining and enjoyable performance.

Congratulations to everyone involved, on stage and behind the scenes and especially to the Directors, Mr Cowlishaw and Ms Newborough. We are now all looking forward to the Trinity Term and the College’s first ever summer musical for the Lower School!

Alongside pupils from schools across the country, our top Year 11 physicists tackled the online challenge with enthusiasm building their confidence, understanding and problem-solving prowess. Their results were excellent with four pupils awarded Gold certificates, congratulations to Bessie McCann, Amber Sandhu, Abbas Hazra and Daniel Ovens Gibbs. 15 pupils received Silver certificates and a further 17 were awarded Bronze.

Our pupils all did very well, congratulations to them all.”

The written Physics Challenge for Year 11 takes place later this year, which will allow our top physicists another chance to tackle a challenging written Physics paper.

Art And Photography Students Visit Tate Britain

On Tuesday 4 February our GCSE and A-level Art and Photography students enjoyed a visit to the Tate Britain.

We took Year 11 Art, and Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth Art and Photography students, to visit the Tate Britain in London on Tuesday 4 February. Along with the main collection, the pupils saw the Turner Prize for 2025 and a vast photographic exhibition that documented Britain in the 1980s.

The trip always provides excellent inspiration for pupils as they begin their preparations for their externally set examination tasks. We do a similar visit every year and the students always have a great day out, whilst expanding their artistic and photographic appreciation.

Summer Exam Season

All pupils have been sent an email with login details to view their exam statement of entry via School Work Space. Timetables for both mocks and external exams can be viewed via the School Work Space portal. Rooming and seating information is visible for mocks and will be updated for external exams nearer to the main exam season.

The external exam timetable has also been published to My School Portal. Approved access arrangements can be viewed on the access arrangement tab in School Work Space.

A few pupils have exam clashes and will be contacted over the next couple of weeks to discuss a resolution. Lent Term - Sixth Form Update (copy)

As this half term draws to a close our Sixth Form students continue working towards important milestones whilst still embracing our community spirit.

As we move further into the term, I'd like to take this opportunity to reflect on recent events and highlight some key areas for our Sixth Form students as they continue working towards important milestones.

The Freshers' Fair on Monday 10 February was a great success, with our Year 11 students enthusiastically exploring Sixth Form subject options, societies and enrichment opportunities that were so eagerly presented by our current students. It was fantastic to see so many Year 11 pupils getting involved and broadening their interests.

Similarly, Blue Day and Valentine's Day have once again brought the Sixth Form community together to highlight a meaningful cause in a fun way. The energy and generosity of our students in supporting these initiatives are truly commendable.

For our Upper Sixth students, the focus remains on their February mock exams, and we are pleased with their commitment and hard work. Meanwhile, the Lower Sixth continue to develop essential skills and future planning.

We greatly appreciate your continued encouragement of positive study habits and a balanced approach to learning and well-being. Your support plays a crucial role in helping students navigate this important phase of their academic journey.

MedSoc at Princethorpe Update

Over the last two weeks MedSoc pupils have been reviewing and applying the 4 Pillars of Medical ethics to interview style questions as well as being introduced to the Situational Judgement section of the UCAT. Both are very important skills in the application process.

Our aspiring medical and veterinary pupils in Y11 and Lower Sixth are currently looking to secure work experience placements for the Easter and summer holidays. We would be extremely grateful if there are any connections within our Princethorpe community that are able to offer placements within your workplace, please send details to joannesmith@princethorpe.co.uk.

We have several exciting events planned for the upcoming weeks, here are some key dates for your calendar.

Blue Day - Friday 14 February 2025

Dress in blue to support prostrate cancer awareness.

Valentines Day - Friday 14 February 2025

Students have today been hand delivering the red and white carnations pupils purchased to send a message to a friend or loved one.

Performing Arts Week - Monday 10 to Friday 14 March 2025

In support of the National Arts Youth Trust we will be providing various activities including performances, workshops and a Dancethon that all students can get involved in.

Careers Fair - Saturday 29 March 2025

"A Coventry Way" is a 40 mile long distance countryside route, circumnavigating the city of Coventry. This annual challenge provides our students with the opportunity to navigate the whole 40-mile route non-stop in one day whilst raising money for Mary's Meals.

It was wonderful to see so many of last year's participants collect their awards from SAS Who Dares Wins participant, Anne Grindal, on Wednesday at the Certificate Evening. It was a fantastic atmosphere with a surprise special guest appearance from Mr Bower. If you would like another chance to see the group photos from the presentation please follow the links, Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Bronze participants have been put into their groups and have been notified via Evolve Consent whether they are in Group A or Group B. The walking groups will be given to the participants nearer to the expedition dates.

Bronze, Silver, and Gold 2024-2025 participants are reminded to check their Teams messages. Please check in with your participant to ensure they are making full use of the support on offer. There is lots of information under the 'Files' tab including a document with links to free online courses that would count towards the Skill or Volunteering sections.

Participants are encouraged to use Teams chats with their Young Leader or individually with Tamsin Frost, Natalie Hardy or Sion Murphy for any extra help.

The presentation, expedition dates and other useful information including the links to online courses is still live on My School Portal under the Co-curricular - Princethorpe page. Link here.

For any Duke of Edinburgh's Award enquires please use the dedicated email dofe@princethorpe.co.uk with the subject DofE-B, S or G-Surname.

We are very excited to be preparing for a fabulous World Book Week here in the Princethorpe Library and beyond!

World Book Day is on Thursday 6 March but we will be celebrating all week in tutor time, in lessons as well as in the library. Have a look at our poster here that shows some of the activities that will be taking place throughout the college.

Our wonderful Pupil Literacy Council have presented their ideas to our Senior Leadership Team and will be supporting in these events. We also have some of the free World Book Day books available to collect from the library, look out for the vouchers which will be coming out soon.

Lent Term Celebration Of Achievement Lunch - Reminder

We would like to invite parents to nominate a pupil for our Lent Term Celebration of Achievement Lunch.

It is always great to hear about our pupils' successes that take place outside of school; please do keep us updated if your son or daughter has won a competition, raised money for charity, is performing in a show or competing at a high level with a sporting team outside of school.

We would like to invite parents to submit this information to us via a nomination form by clicking here so we might celebrate these achievements in school too.  The form will close on Friday 21 February.
